Ayurveda, or Ayurvedic medicine, stands as a traditional system of medicine originating from the Indian subcontinent, offering an alternative approach to healthcare. The Suśruta Saṃhitā and the Charaka Saṃhitā, ancient Sanskrit texts, serve as the oldest known encyclopedias of Ayurveda, playing foundational roles in shaping this holistic system.

In Sri Lanka, practitioners of Ayurveda refer to Sanskrit texts common to both India and Sri Lanka, although variations may exist, particularly in the utilization of herbs. To oversee and regulate Ayurvedic practices within the country, the Sri Lankan government established the Ministry of Indigenous Medicine in 1980. The Institute of Indigenous Medicine, affiliated with the University of Colombo, offers comprehensive education, including undergraduate, postgraduate, and MD degrees in Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery, as well as similar degrees in unani medicine.

To promote the authentic practice of Ayurveda, many hotels and resorts in Sri Lanka provide Ayurveda-themed packages. These packages offer guests a diverse range of Ayurvedic treatments during their stay, allowing them to immerse themselves in the traditional local atmosphere. If you’re interested, I can assist you in selecting the best Ayurveda treatments on the island to ensure you experience the genuine and rejuvenating aspects of this ancient healing tradition. Trust me to guide you through an authentic Ayurvedic journey in Sri Lanka.

Kandyan dance, named after the city of Kandy, the last royal capital of Sri Lanka, holds the distinction of being the classical dance form of the country. Located approximately 120 kilometers from the present capital, Colombo, Kandy is the cultural heartland where this traditional dance flourished. In Sanskrit, Kandyan dance is classified as pure dance (nrtta), characterized by an intricate rhythmic system provided by cymbals known as “thalampataa.”

The dance comprises five distinct types: ves, naiyandi, uddekki, pantheru, and vannams. Each type contributes to the rich tapestry of movements and expressions within the Kandyan dance tradition. The accompanying drum for Kandyan dancing is the Geta Bera. In other regional dances, such as Ruhunu and Sabaragamu, different drums like the Yak Bera and Davula are employed, respectively. The term “Bera” or “Bereya” in Sinhalese signifies “Drum.”

The Geta Bera and Yak Bera are played with the hands, while the Davula is manipulated with a stick on one side and one hand on the other. Notably, the Geta Bera has a tapered body on both sides, distinguishing it from the cylindrical bodies of the Yak Bera and the Davula. Kandyan dance, with its elaborate movements, rhythmic precision, and cultural significance, stands as a testament to Sri Lanka’s rich artistic heritage.
